Coffee and Energy Drinks During Detox: Tell the Team About Your Usual Caffeine Intake

Should You Change Your Caffeine Intake Before Alcohol or Drug Detox?

Ask the clinician reviewing your detox admission to guide any changes to your usual caffeine intake. Give them a list of the products you use, the amounts and times, and anything you have recently stopped or changed. Keep that clinical question separate from asking which beverages the facility allows you to bring.

What belongs in your caffeine summary?

Write down your actual routine, not just “I drink coffee.” Include:

  • Products: Coffee, tea, caffeinated soda, energy drinks, caffeine tablets, and pre-workout products. Include supplements or medicines labeled as containing caffeine.
  • Amounts: Usual servings, cup or container sizes, and the amount you actually consume. Photograph product labels when available.
  • Timing: When you usually use each product and when you last had it.
  • Changes: Anything you recently stopped, reduced, increased, or replaced—including a sudden change while preparing for admission.

If you do not know an amount or ingredient, mark it as unknown rather than guessing. A family member can help gather labels or write down the routine.

How should you describe symptoms?

If you have headaches, sleep problems, anxiety, or fatigue, record when they began alongside changes in caffeine, alcohol, drugs, and medications. Keep observations separate from explanations: “I stopped my usual coffee yesterday, and my headache began this morning” reports a sequence without deciding what caused it.

Leaving out a caffeine change makes that timeline incomplete. Do not label symptoms as caffeine withdrawal or dismiss them as “just caffeine.” Ask the assessing clinician to review the symptoms and the full history rather than trying a caffeine change as a substitute for assessment.

What should you confirm before arrival?

Request an individualized plan instead of choosing your own cutoff or taper schedule, or using energy drinks or caffeine tablets to counter fatigue. Ask two separate questions:

  • What should I do about my usual caffeine intake before arrival?
  • Which beverages or products may I bring, and how is their use handled?

A packing answer is not a clinical plan. Keep prescription questions separate, too; review what to confirm about bringing prescribed medications.
