What If You Cannot Follow Individual Counseling During Alcohol Detox?
If you are too unwell to follow an individual counseling conversation, say what is difficult and ask for clinical assessment before deciding whether to continue. Ask separately about your care needs and what should happen to the session; do not assume that you must push through or that you have permission to miss it.
Request an individual assessment of both medical stabilization and your ability to participate. Describe what you can manage right now rather than judging yourself as motivated or unmotivated.
How can I explain that the conversation is not working?
Tell staff about nausea, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or effects you think may relate to medication. Explain when the difficulty began and how it affects the conversation. You do not have to identify the cause yourself.

A useful way to ask is: “I can hear what you are saying, but I cannot follow the questions or remember the discussion. Can we contact clinical staff to assess me and clarify what to do about this session?”
If you have not yet attended, notify your care team rather than simply staying away. If you are already speaking with the counselor, explain the difficulty as it happens. Ask for clinical help with symptoms, not only a change to the appointment.
Should I ask for a simpler conversation or a pause?
Explain which part feels unmanageable so the team can consider your request:

- You can discuss one concern but not several: Ask whether the conversation can focus on that concern, with other topics saved for later.
- You cannot follow an explanation: Ask for one question at a time, simpler wording, or a written reminder of any agreed next step.
- You feel unable to continue: Ask for assessment and a decision about pausing, shortening, or postponing the session.
These are requests to discuss, not promised accommodations. Confirm who authorizes a change and what participation is expected afterward.
What should be clarified before the conversation ends?
Ask the counselor to separate what you actually discussed from what remains unfinished. For example: “We talked about my immediate concern, but I could not follow the rest. What still needs discussion, and whom should I tell if I remain unable to participate?”
Before ending, confirm any next step in your own words. If you still do not understand it, say so rather than agreeing just to finish the session.

Before admission, when you discuss alcohol and drug detox options in Miami, ask which individual counseling and educational activities are offered and how unfinished or medically interrupted sessions are handled. If you take prescriptions, prepare your prescribed medication information before admission for the medication-review discussion.
Call Summer House Detox Center at (800) 719-1090 before arrival and ask: “If I am too unwell to participate in individual counseling, who assesses me and how are participation expectations handled?” If you are already in treatment, direct that question to your current clinical team.
